Miaoyuanzi, a Traditional Chinese Medicine Wellness Steward: With the Heart of Qihuang, Guarding Daily Well-being——A Profile of Miaoyuanzi, Inheritor of Xuanyan Dao Culture

Huang Liya, also known by her art name Miaoyuanzi, is an inheritor of Xuanyan Dao Culture. She is not a renowned physician confined to elite clinics, but a wellness steward rooted in ordinary life. From herbal scents in rural villages to urban pharmacies, from a licensed pharmacist to an inheritor of traditional Chinese medicine wellness, she has spent half her life treading a steady path: drawing wisdom from medicinal herbs and helping people through wellness preservation.
I. Rural Herbal Fragrance Sows the Original Aspiration
Miaoyuanzi spent her childhood surrounded by the aroma of medicinal herbs in the countryside. Her father’s generation were well-known folk healers. Villagers would trek over mountains to seek their help for minor ailments. She often squatted beside the herbal mill, watching her uncle process medicinal ingredients and prescribe formulas based on syndrome differentiation. She saw patients arrive with furrowed brows and leave with relaxed faces. Those scenes of healing and saving lives quietly took root in her young heart. Her uncle often told her: “Medicines are to save lives, not to make money.” She has kept these words in mind all her life.

II. Wandering for a Livelihood, Finally Returning to the Herbal Trade
In her youth, fate took many twists and turns. Her original field of study had nothing to do with medicine. With the abolition of job assignment policies, she had to take odd jobs to make a living. By chance, with the recommendation of a senior practitioner, she formally entered the pharmaceutical industry and opened her own pharmacy.
Standing behind the counter, she increasingly felt her knowledge was insufficient — enthusiasm and experience alone were far from enough. Unwilling to stop there, she ran the pharmacy while studying diligently. Through the adult college entrance examination, she majored in pharmacy, systematically learning pharmaceutics, pharmacology and other courses. For years, burning the midnight oil after closing the pharmacy became her routine. Her efforts paid off. She obtained her pharmacy diploma and passed the examination to become a licensed pharmacist.
Nevertheless, years behind the counter made her notice a dilemma: many patients with chronic diseases could only control their indicators with medication, yet the root problems remained unresolved. Patients took hypertension medicine for years, but their blood pressure still fluctuated. Diabetic patients received repeated insulin injections, yet complications still occurred. She began to wonder: beyond medication, was there a more fundamental way to restore health?

III. Encountering Xuanyan Dao and Learning Wellness Systematically
A public welfare TCM course opened the door to traditional medicine for her. For the first time, she systematically learned the concept of preventive treatment of disease: rather than administering medicine after illness strikes, it is better to preserve wellness before sickness comes. This aligned perfectly with the confusion she had harbored for years. She realized true health is not maintained by drugs, but nurtured little by little through daily diet, living routines, emotions and physical activity.
By destiny, she became a disciple of Mr. Liu Xuanyan, founder of Xuanyan Dao Culture and inheritor of TCM wellness culture, to systematically study traditional Chinese wellness knowledge. At that time, although she understood pharmacology, she knew nothing about zang-fu organs and meridians. Her innate perseverance drove her to strive day and night. She rose at 4:30 every morning to recite classics, memorizing Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Internal Classic), Shanghan Lun (Treatise on Febrile Diseases), Jinkui Yaolue (Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber) and other ancient texts without interruption.
Her studies under her master always centered on “wellness preservation”: not treating people after they fall ill, but teaching them how to avoid sickness and stay healthy. From seasonal wellness and dietary conditioning, to meridian massage and emotional counseling, moxibustion, cupping and medicinal food soups, she absorbed all aspects of TCM wellness into her mind and practiced them with her own hands.

IV. Testing Methods on Herself, Affirming the Path of Wellness
In 2015, she suffered from severe lumbar intervertebral disc herniation. Treatment in multiple hospitals brought little improvement. Doctors suggested surgery, but she chose the harder route — conservative conditioning with traditional Chinese medicine. At the early stage of meditation practice, the pain made her shed tears after merely five minutes, yet she gritted her teeth and persisted. With moxibustion to warm and unblock meridians, tuina to relax tendons, oral herbal medicine and qigong exercises, her health improved gradually and the illness healed. Having personally experienced the power of TCM wellness, she grew more confident in the art of Qihuang.
Over these years, she devoted herself to research. While healing herself, she protected her family. She personally treated her parents’ chronic ailments and watched them regain vitality, which strengthened her resolve to spread TCM wellness. She often says: “Wellness preservation is no empty talk. It is a practical skill that truly improves people’s well-being.”
V. Taking Examinations for Proficiency, to Put Wellness into Practice
In her forties, Miaoyuanzi never stopped progressing. Years of wellness practice made her deeply realize that to be a competent wellness steward, experience and passion alone are inadequate. Solid theoretical foundations of traditional Chinese medicine are essential. To deliver better health care and become a more professional TCM practitioner, she prepared systematically for professional certifications. Her simple goal was not to practice medicine under a license, but to deepen her theoretical knowledge so she could provide better wellness care.
In 2026, she officially obtained the Certificate for Proven Specialized Skills in Traditional Medicine. She plans to sit for the Licensed TCM Physician Examination in the near future. She states: “I take these exams so I can carry out TCM wellness services in a more legitimate way and benefit more people.” From licensed pharmacist to holder of proven specialized skills in traditional medicine, every step she takes leads toward one goal: to be a professional, reliable and down-to-earth wellness steward.

VI. Apprenticeship with a National Master of Chinese Medicine, Exploring the Root of Wellness
Recommended by her mentor Mr. Liu Xuanyan, who sets no barriers to discipleship, she also studied under Professor Zhang Daning, a National Master of Chinese Medicine. Professor Zhang is the founding pioneer of TCM nephrology in China. With over sixty years of clinical practice, he first proposed the “kidney deficiency and blood stasis theory” and established the “kidney-tonifying and blood-activating therapy”. Even in his advanced years, he still sees patients and imparts his knowledge wholeheartedly. Throughout his life, he abides by the academic maxim: read classics, follow distinguished masters, and accumulate abundant clinical experience.
Studying under the master, the greatest gain for Miaoyuanzi is a rigorous academic attitude: efficacy is the foundation of traditional Chinese medicine. Only by reading classics, engaging in clinical practice and learning from wise masters can we uphold traditions and pass on knowledge. She hopes to build a more solid theoretical foundation through learning from the master, better implement TCM wellness services, and transform the master’s academic wisdom into simple, practical daily wellness methods for ordinary people, fulfilling her role as a TCM wellness steward.

VII. Wellness Steward, Bringing Wondrous Healing to the World
Today, Huang Liya has a clear identity: Miaoyuanzi, the TCM wellness steward. In her opinion, wellness stewards share the same mission as physicians who save lives — both are guardians of public health. A wellness steward enters thousands of households, formulates personalized health plans according to individual constitutions, guides people to adjust diet and daily routines with the changing seasons, and administers TCM conditioning promptly when the body sends warning signals, accompanying people to turn health into a daily habit.
Guided by the teachings of her distinguished mentors, Miaoyuanzi keeps her feet firmly on the ground. She delves into ancient classics and accumulates practical wellness experience. For the rest of her life, she will continue to carry forward TCM wellness inheritance. As a pragmatic wellness steward, she will use her knowledge of wellness to safeguard the daily health of more people.
Miaoyuanzi says: “I will devote my whole life to one thing — doing wellness preservation well. My greatest wish is to help people around me get sick less, or not get sick at all.”
